August Personal Favorites

I know I’m a few days late, but life is so crazy lately.  Whenever I do happen to have the rare moments of a little bit of quiet time, I’m usually hanging with Brian and the dogs.  However, I did have a really great August, minus classes starting again, and I wanted to share some of it!
  • Six Flags

Brian and I went to Six Flags with my family the other weekend and we had a lot of fun!  We rode a bunch of roller coasters and enjoyed the water park until it started raining.
  • Class schedule
Getting my class schedule figured out was hectic – I was waitlisted, and didn’t into a few classes. I also moved a lot of classes around in my schedule.  However, it is all worth it because I have a GREAT schedule this semester.  Obviously, it’s not smart to say my schedule exactly, but I couldn’t be happier!
  • Atmosphere Concert

With school starting, this concert feels like ages ago, but we were able to see Atmosphere at our favorite venue this month.  It was his tour for his new album, The Family Sign.  Personally, this is my least favorite album of his, it has a very different mood.  However, if you haven’t checked him out, you definitely should.  A few of my favorite songs of his are Little Man, Saves the Day, Sunshine, and almost every other song he’s produced.
  • Horsetooth Reservoir

I made a post about our trip, so I’ll link it here.  It was just your typical day at the lake with tubing, cliff jumping, tanning, swimming, and beautiful scenery as well!
  • Suits

Brian and I have discovered, yet another great show!   It is currently airing it’s first season on USA and it has quickly made it to the top of our favorite shows.  It follows a sucessful law firm, and it sort of like Mad Men in the sense of they’re dealing with different cases each episode but there’s the underlying story following their lives that continues throughout the season.  I don’t want to talk too much about it because a lot goes on in the first episode that gets you set up for the following ones.  Just take my word that this is an awesome show!  I’ve already got my dad watching it ;).
  • Beginning Meal Plans
After talking about it forever,  Brian and I finally started the meal plans.  We have made some delicious meals (vegetarian for me!), but I also need to start dieting during the day time meals if I want to continue eating such deliciousness.  I’ll start posting more meal plans and pics of the food in the upcoming weeks!

Dog Attack

I had one of the scariest experiences of my life yesterday, one that made me just breakdown and cry because it  was such a shock.

I went to let the boys out before work yesterday.  As we were walking down the stairs, another guy was entering into his apartment.  When he opened the door, his dog escaped and came running towards Boo, Kicks, and I.  I figured the dog would be friendly so I didn’t move or pick Kicks up.  Instead, this dog was not friendly.  It didn’t even bother to smell Kicks, but instead just starting violently attacking him and biting him.  Boo was trying to protect Kicks, but he couldn’t really do much.  The other owner was trying to break it up as well and in the process, he picked Kicks up by his leash so Kicks was basically dangling in the air by the leash on his collar.  That is probably what made me the most angry.  There’s other ways to pick up my dog, he’s not going to bite you like your crazy dog is attacking mine.  Another dog from their apartment started running down the walkway and almost joined in.  By then Kicks was in my hands and I had Boo in control, but he was never out of control to begin with.  The other owner picked up both of their dogs.  They apologized and walked off.  When we finally got downstairs and onto the grass, the first thing Boo did was come up to Kicks and make sure he was okay.

Kicks was barking and whimpering and the other dog was growling and also barking so there was a lot of commotion and it was really loud.  A few neighbors poked their heads out for a second, but then quickly shut the door.  I was in such a shock of what happened, Kicks wouldn’t even go to the bathroom or leave my  arms.  Even 30 minutes after this happened, I had to go to work but Kicks was still barking and shaking.  I have never seen Kicks this scared in his life.   We’ve taken him to the dog park and have had some dogs chasing him, but then turn aggressive and try biting him, but we’ve never had anything this serious to deal with.  When I walked in the door I was so heartbroken, and scared, and shocked, and worried, and probably every other emotion in the book that I just broke down and started balling.  That  was my baby being viciously attacked and it came out of no where, I wasn’t prepared for that. Luckily, I didn’t find any blood.

On my way to work I stopped by my leasing office because Kicks was barking, and I thought he would for a while so I simply wanted to let them know that he was shaken up and might be barking for a while.  I ended up in tears again and they basically strongly suggested I tell them who it was because this has happened before with another dog getting out.  I ended up telling them, but said a few times that it was not why I was there and am not upset, I understand accidents happen.  I simply wanted to tell them  that Kicks is scared and might be barking more than usual that day, in case one of the neighbors complained.  The office said they would talk to the people and I then felt very bad about going to the office in the first place.

When I got home from work, Kicks seemed to be much better and had calmed down a lot.

Horsetooth Reservoir

Last week, as a last summer hoo-rah Brian and I went to the lake with part of my family.  The day started off rough, with Brian hitting something and it puncturing his tire (thankgoodness for AAA!).  However, afterwards it was a fun day of tubing, tanning, and hanging out.  The scenery is beautiful as the lake is surrounded by mountains.  I have some great pics of the scenery and Brian and I that I wanted to share!

Summer Vacation Is Over

Yes, sadly the first day of classes are today and my official “summer”  has come to an end.  I have never been so sad, and feeling not ready at all for classes to start.  I think it is because we did so many great things this summer that I am not ready for it to be over.   I’m going to list my favorite things we did this summer, so it’ll be a great way to remember the fun!

  • Dog Parks
  • Outdoor movie of “Friday the 13th”
  • Water World
  • Atmosphere Concert
  • Lake Havasu
  • Fourth of July

  • Horsetooth Resevoir
  • And we’re hopefully going to Elitch Gardens amusement park next week  if Brian has the day off!
We also did a bunch of other fun little things and day trips.  For the most part I did almost everything I wanted to.  Next summer we’re planning another vacation, not sure where yet.   I also want to go camping and do more hiking as well!

IKEA

We finally got an IKEA this past week!

Unfortunately, it’s about an hour away from where we live,

but fortunately it’s only like 5-10 mins from my parents house, so we’ll be there often!

YAY!

Brian and I happened to be in the area on Friday night and we had a few minutes until we had to meet his family

Well, an hour and a half to be exact because that’s how long it took us to just simply walk through the area.

We didn’t really stop anywhere,

and we didn’t buy anything (much to my dismay).

However, I have decided to re-do each room in our apartment,

especially since our lease has just been renewed.

Needless to say, I am pretty stoked about the plans I have in store, and so is my house!

I am going to start with the hallway, bathroom, and laundry room.

I also need to have a garage sale to sell all of our dishware because I want new stuff!

I am also going to blog my progress so stay tuned for some really great decorating!

Personal July Favorites

July has been a great month overall.  It’s had it’s ups and downs, but we did a lot of cool things this month that made summer even more special.  I am extremely upset that August is a day away because that means classes are starting up again, and eventually cold  weather. Yuck.  However, I want to share some of my favorite things I did and saw this month.
  • Harry Potter Deathly Hallows pt 2 – I am a huge Potterhead.  I’ve read all of the books and want to read them again, have seen all of the movies numerous times, and wish Hogwarts was real.  Unfortunately, we were out of town on the night that Dealthy Hallows part 2 premiered otherwise we totally would have been there.  However, we did go the night we got back.  This and the movie beforehand have been my favorites because the follow the book so well.  The one thing I don’t like in the movies is how soft Voldemort is portrayed.  His voice, his actions, his persona.  It’s annoying because that’s not the Voldemort we know from the book.
  • Lake Havasu –  My friend owns a beach house out there so we went there for about 5 days.  There were 8 of us and it obviously got crazy.  We had some really good times, and a few miserable experiences as well.  Overall it was a lot of fun with a lot of booze, tubing, tanning, drinking, hungover-ness, drinking, no eating, Michael Jackson, and drinking.  I have some really great pics and memories, I still haven’t decided if I want to do a post talking about it or not.
The REAL London Bridge
  • Fourth of July – The kid in me loves watching fireworks and I look forward to it every year.  This year we went with some friends of ours to our college stadium where they did a show and lucky for you I filmed the finale 😉
  • Dog Parks – For a while Brian and I were taking the dogs to the dog park everyday but then we went on vacation and now our work schedules have been the exact oposite from one another so we haven’t been able to do it daily lately.  For the most part the boys love it, Kicks can get scared sometimes because the larger dogs are so aggressive and they’re always so intrigued by Kicks.  We’ve had a few close calls with dogs chasing and biting him so I’m a lot more careful and weary of other dogs when around him (especially when other owners do nothing to control their dogs, but that’s another story).  The dog park we go to is the best one I’ve ever seen.. it’s a huge area of open space with trails, a ditch that’s full of water and a mini lake.  The boys love going in the water.. and Kicks began to go in by himself too. I love watching them play and sometimes I wonder if I don’t have more fun than they do.

So dirty - the result was a 30min bath

  • Californication – I just talked about this in my Netflix post, but I’ve been obsessed with this show all month long and watched 3 seasons in less than 3 weeks.  We finally finished season 4 and I have never been more bummed than when I found out that season 5 isn’t coming out until 2012.  SPOILER ALERT: With the way they left the season finale, it could have easily been a series finale so I’m hoping they find a way to make season 5 as  good as the others.  If you know of any other great shows like Californication, or any other great ones in general let me know so I can watch those!

5 Great Shows Netflix Introduced Me To

We have been cable free for over a year now.  In the past year I don’t feel like I have missed out on any of the tv shows that I frequently watched before because you can find any show you’d want to watch on the internet.  One of our main sources to watch shows on is Instant Netflix.  Unfortunately in the next few months, they will be making it a whole separate service from the dvds you get in the mail and will be adding a fee if you still want to continue with the Instant Netflix.  We are going to continue to sign up for it, as long as they don’t raise the prices again, because we still think its worth it.  Netflix has introduced me to a lot of great shows and I thought I would share them with you incase you haven’t checked out any of these shows before.  Obviously, I highly recommend you do so ASAP.
  • Californication
Californication is about writer, Hank Moody who moves to California from New York and hasn’t been able to write a word in ages.  Hank is the typical Hollywood bad boy who turns to women, drugs, and booze every night to forget his troubles.   He has a daughter Becca and is still in love with her mother, although she  is engaged to another man.  Hank still loves Becca’s mother, Karen, and is trying to win her back.  In the meantime he has no problem getting into all sorts of trouble that will make you simply say “wow.”  I liked this show after season one, but it is one of the few that I think has gotten better as seasons go on.  I am currently halfway done with season 4 (will probably finish it in a few days 😉 ), and I love every episode more and more.  This show really does get better the more you watch it  with constant drama, partying, girls, and situations that end in disaster one after another.
  • Man Vs Wild
Now I have obviously heard of this show and have seen excerpts on tv, but until a few months ago I never sat down to watch a full episode, because frankly, I wasn’t interested and it didn’t fit into my typical genre of tv shows that interest me (you know –  drama, reality tv, romance.. girl stuff).  I’m not sure how it happened, but all of a sudden my boyfriend and I were watching episodes constantly.  Any apprehensions and discernment about this show not being for me were quickly thrown out the window. You follow Bear Grylls as he gets dropped in the middle of some of the most dangerous places on the planet (rain forest, desert, artic, etc) and he only has his backpack, a few tools, and his skill to keep himself alive for about 2 days until he finds a way out.  There are definitely some disgusting situations he gets himself into regarding what he has to eat, drink, or use to keep warm, but it is extremely fascinating none the less and I have learned a lot!  His awesome accent is a major bonus, as well!
  • Psych
Psych is a light, humorous show about a man whose father raised him to notice the detail in everything.  This has helped him to now work with the police, with his partner, to solve mysteries.  However, the police think he is a true Psychic and so he frequently is solving the crime like any normal agent – finding clues, putting them together, getting leads, and so on.  However, his “readings” come at just the right time when the police agents are around to help solve the mysteries.  This show is very entertaining with the relationship dynamics, lines, and situations that Shawn Spencer gets himself into.
  • The League
Let me start off by saying 2 prefaces:  (1) My boyfriend and I hate football (I know, I know you want to banish us), but that’s what this show is primarily about  (2)  My boyfriend also forced me to watch that show.  With that being said – I love The League!  It is about a group of guys who are in a fantasy football league together.  Since I don’t know sports I found a great summary that I will copy and paste to tell you what this show is about:

Set against the backdrop of a fantasy football league, The League is about friendship, marriage, parenting, and growing up…or refusing to grow up.

Fantasy football provides an outlet for good-natured competition and camaraderie between friends and colleagues, but that’s not always the case. Deception, trickeration, one-upmanship and a win-at-all costs mentality are prevalent in the world of fantasy football and it’s no different in The League. The emotional tentacles of fantasy football extend to personal relationships, marriages and the workplace, all fertile ground for comedy. Source

All I have to say is that is hilarious!   Absolutely love this show, and when has FX ever let you down? (Uh, never).

  • Weeds

This show has gained an immense amount of popularity and I’m sure most of you have a general idea of what the show’s about. Pot.  Yep, that’s all just marijuana.  Just joking, there’s a little bit more to the show.  The show follows Nancy Botwin, a widowed mother, who is trying to raise her children (and brother in-law) and make ends meet.  To do so, she begins selling pot, small amounts to begin with, but then boosts to large scale dealing and growing.  You can only imagine the characters one has to deal with and the situations she gets into.  Her life is the epitome of a roller coaster ride, with extreme highs and the lowest lows one can have.  Meanwhile, she tries to keep her business separate from her family life and not have her children completely go off the deep end.   Personally this is easily in my top 5 tv shows.  However, with that being said season 1-3 were my favorites and it has gone steadily downhill from there.  Season 7 is currently airing, which is said to be the last, and all I can say is I hope it improves and leaves off on a high note of how it started.
Other Honorable Mentions would include Damages, as my boyfriend is obsessed with this show and made it to the top 5 favorite TV shows after watching just a few episodes. The series focuses on a successful law firm in NYC dealing with high-stakes litigation.   The show revolved around Patty Hewes,  the nation’s most revered and reviled high-stakes litigator, and her bright, ambitious protégé Ellen Parsons (source).  They’re dealing with a case against Arthur Frobisher, in which scandal, backstabbing, blackmail, and distrust are all at constant play.  You never know who is really good and who is evil, or maybe they’re all a bit of both.
I also began watching Ally McBeal, which I have been enjoying. It is another law show about a lawyer, Ally McBeal, who joins a new law firm only to find out that the love of her life, and longtime boyfriend during college, works there.  To her dismay, he is married and you are taken along for the ride as they both try to deal with their feelings for one another.   This is a total chick flick (or show, I guess) and to be honest I find it a bit slow at times.  I’ve been watching it for a few months and am only on the second season.  I know what I want to happen, I just wish the show would hurry up and let me know if it will or not.

And finally these are not new shows, but a few of our favorites you can get on Instant Netflix: That 70s Show and Scrubs.  Need I say any more?

Let me know in the comments if there’s any other shows on Instant Netflix that I’m missing and you think I should check out!  Also, if you  watch, or have watched, any of these shows then I want to know your thoughts!

Beach Body

Confession: I hate running.  Not just dislike it, I hate it.  Probably more than hate it, if I knew of the word.

About a year ago, my boyfriend and I would run about 4x/week or everyday.

This carried on for a few months.

…a few miserable months.

We even were seriously considering doing a local 10k.

I felt good after the run,

but the whole two miles or so it was miserable

and I had to use every little bit of tiny self motivation I had to force myself to go on the run.

School finally got too busy and we started to run less and less (thankfully).

However, my body paid the price.

I’ve never been overweight, but I haven’t had the perfect body either.

So, we are going to Lake Havasu and I decided it was time to get the perfect beach body.

I’ve been watching what I’ve eating, but I needed to take it further than that.

I realized that I can work out, without having to run.  Yay!

So in order to not only lose weight, I have been working out to tone my body as well.

Here is what I’ve been doing:

Breakfast – skipping (I know, I know, not healthy at all but it helps!) or having a glass of oj and mixing 30g protein within 30 minutes of waking (this is essential!!)

Small snack – toast

Lunch – pro-long lunch as long as possible.  Lunch is where I allow myself to indulge because I know I’ll have a work out and the rest of the day to work it off.

Dinner – I honestly have been trying not to eat dinner, or eat a very small portion of something. I will also eat about 5 hours before I head to bed

Bedtime snack – fruit leather if anything

Throughout the day – 8 glasses of water.  It  helps to make you feel as if you’re full!

My biggest thing is portion control.   What I do eat and or unhealthy items I let myself indulge in, I do in small portions.  It’s a  compromise.

I’ve also learned not to beat myself up if I don’t eat as well as I had planned.

Tomorrow is a new day to start over.

Now, I realize this is not a healthy diet by any means.  I needed something that would help me loose about 5 lbs fast.

I would not recommend anyone try this, it is just what worked for me.

As far as working out I have been doing:

this  and this ab work out everyday

and to get a variety of moves as well, I have been doing these varying ab workouts everyday as well.

To get cardio in I have been doing 30 minutes on the eliptical.

Each time I try to up the level/intensity and time

and then 20/30 minutes on the bike.

The reasons I do these is because the only areas I feel I need to tone are my legs and abs.

Obviously, this is not for everyone.

Find a workout routine that fits best with the areas you struggle with.

This is the first time, ever, that I actually look forward to working out.

Also, seeing improvements on your body is such a booster and motivator!
